Recent stuff I like and dislike

Wed Oct 28, 2009, 9:59 PM
I like the Tron Legacy teaser, and the prospect of a sequel to Tron.
It's just a funny coincidence that earlier this year I felt like checking out Tron from the library. I hadn't seen it since I was -- something like seven years old. As a 3-D animator myself, it's fun to look at Hollywood's first CG flick, and see what challenges they had, and think about where things have gone since then. I had heard of a sequel, and I also heard of the videogame "sequel", but to hear the final word that they were actually going to do it, not too long after I had taken that 80s trip, really sparked something in my interest. I was intrigued by ideas and questions about how they were going to translate all the concepts into a modern style. I enjoy movies that have sequels 30 years later. When you revisit a character in his old age (with the original actor), somehow that span of years makes the character more real to me. I also tend to feel nostalgia watching classics, even when I personally never saw them growing up. (I have a way of putting myself in the shoes of other people, in this case, sensing how other people feel about movies they grew up with) When I watch the trailer (which is not actually a trailer so it's probably better classified as a teaser), I got really excited. Something that's interesting to note is that one of the reasons I was getting into it, I didn't realize consciously at first-- I had to really think about it before I realized what it was. It was the music. It strikes a retro synthesizer vibe while still maintaining some class-- making a perfect fit for Tron. I'm also excited about the young version of Kevin Flynn. It's probably the first time I've seen a computer-generated human face which I could just look at and not have to think about the fact that it's computer-generated. How appropriate it is that the sequel to Tron is still doing the same thing-- at the front edge what can be done with computer graphics. At the same time, they haven't gone so far as to remove another element that is important to Tron, which is using computer graphics to give it a distinctly digital look. This is still present in everything surrounding the characters, which is great for creating the overall atmosphere and tying it with the concept. It's funny then, that this is also the only thing in the teaser that bothers me -- a look that is too digital -- in the body movement of the characters. This is a conflict in my mind, because really, these characters are supposed to be programs, not people, so what could be more appropriate than a slightly unnatural look? All in all it's an interesting blend, on the whole making this teaser very fun for me to see.

I like the new "A Boy and His Blob"
Many people have gripes about all the remakes, but this is one good example of where making a remake is as right as pumkin pie. The original concept was awesome, and the original game was terrible. Those are the best conditions for a do-over. Ever since the first time I played a boy and his blob, I thought I would like to make (or like to see made) a remake.

I like this:
Waiting for the Bus
Which is better if you're familiar with Kris-Wilson's :iconkris-wilson: Humor

I like that the Koopalings are back. Yyaayyyy!!
800x600
High Rez

I HATE the Mario character Chess Set
Overall they almost have a good selection for the pieces, It's just that the biggest mass blunder was with the pons on both sides-- two mistakes ruining HALF of the board.
What idiot doesn't know Goombas are Pawns?
Then for the other side you could mirror the goombas with toadstool people, or better yet, power mushrooms. At least they've been known to MOVE. Much better than frickn' COINS.
The reason I was so upset about this is because I've wanted a Mario chess set since I was just a wee little lad-- and I can't think of any other franchise that has characters so perfectly suited for every roll that you can almost stage a chess battle like a real one, yet they still managed to overlook the obvious ("They" apparently being the videogame makers in Japan licensing out the product, not the actual toymakers. They really understand videogames, but their logic regarding everything else is screwed up)
And now for the finer points:
Having relocated goombas, Rooks are quite obviously Thwomps! A franchise staple, they look like Castles, and they frickn' move in fast straight lines!
Since I got rid of the empty turtle shell (Gag-Puke), I want to see the winged koopa troopa as the knight. Even though Birdo has been known to mirror Yoshi in most games, the winged koopa is a franchise staple, it mirrors Yoshi better visually, and it hops around just like a knight piece.
There are a few more changes I would make, but the ones I've mentioned already would be sufficient. Now, if you really wanted pieces to act their roles, the Princess would be the King and Mario would be the Queen.

And then there are the other things that I hate/like. They're a waste of time but I just can't let them go because I'm like a mildly obsessive-compulsive person. A good example would be when I HAD TO generate an image displaying all 16,777,216 colors. I even devised a way to make an image based version where I actually make a picture while using all possible colors. But I must not do it because-- what's the point? I would only do it so I can say I can do it. It doesn't actually mean anything.. This isn't the first time I've had to stop myself from spending countless hours on something (kind of cool but) completely useless. However most of the time I'm somewhat unsuccessful in controlling that... hurrgh..
